Hi all,
I recently dropped my iPod mini, and now it won't turn on or connect to my computer, and it's making odd clicking noises. I think this means I killed the hard drive (although if anyone thinks otherwise, please tell me). I want to replace the hard drive myself, but I'm having trouble finding instructions on how to go about opening minis. Does anyone know how to do this or have a link to a site that does? Thanks!

my mini all of a sudden takes 10-15 minutes to switch screens. Sometimes when I reset it, the apple logo stays on the screen for a long time. I am thinking that it is time to replace the hard drive. If I am going to go through the trouble of cracking it open I am thinking of putting in a larger drive. Can I put in a drive that is larger than 4GB?

Yes, but it will be costly. Microdrives are expensive. I saw online for a 6GB microdrive it was $239, and a 4GB was $139. Plus you have to be careful with the l imited amount of space in the Mini.

mini's are extremely hard to open and I wouldn't recommend it unless you know exactly what you are doing and are very careful.

Can I put in a drive that is larger than 4GB?Yes you can - Seagate makes an 8GB CompactFlash / MicroDrive that you can use. Amazon sells them for $150.

has anyone ever tried sticking a normal compact flash card into their ipod mini and trying to format it?

Thank you to those who answered my question. I've decided just to get a new ipod instead of spending over $100 to fix my mini.

you dont have to spend that much. Go on ebay and spend like $50 plus shipping
