hi well if you go into my computer ''start -> my computer'' --> your ipod should show as ''removable disk or something along them lines''--> ''right click this and click format'' -->''then tick the boxs quick format then click start''-->'' after that is finish launch ipod updater and restore the ipod then try again :D

ok, if ipod updater can find it, try formatting it

I'm having exactly the same problem too with my Nano. The problem is: the Updater detects my iPod, but iTunes doesn't. Maybe there's a built in protection against mounting the same iPod on another iTunes installation. (I reinstalled my PC today.)

I am having the sam problem. Every time I connect my 4gb ipod mini it says that it needs to be reformatted. Itunes will not even accept its existance. I have reformatted it loads of times but it still says it needs formatting. I even went to the apple store in London and had my ipod tested and the only solution they suggested was that I should make sure I have all the updates. Well duh! Is there anyone out there who is obviously cleverer than apple and knows a solution to this?

Here's a better idea.

Post your solution here so others can benefit.

I hd exactly the same prob. It turned to be my computer's fault cause when I tried with my sis laptop it worked fine. I ended up formating the pc than the iPod and the prob was solved. I guess smt caused a clash and my iPod couldn't be recognized as a disk or in iTunes but the the pc could see a usb connected and could recognize it a a 'mass storage system' ...

Ok first of all its not IPOD's or iTunes fault...

Its our good 'ol WINDOWS...

Please follow the steps exactly as described :-

1. go to c:\windows\system32\drivers
2. find these files: secdrv.sys, sptd.sys and sptdXXXX.sys (XXX is a number)
3.copy and paste these files in some other place just in case.
4. rename or delete these files
5. reboot your machine
6. re-insert your IPOD

And that should take care of the problem...
