What version windows or MAC do you have? If you dont have XP or something, it might not recognize it. Also you should check to see if you have a high power usb port. I know if you dont, it wont work. Hope it helps.

Instead of opening a new thread which would be pointless I thought I would post on this one as it goes along the same lines.
My Ipod works fine when plugged into a Windows 2000/Millennium Edition PC no sweat.
But it will not work with any of my machines that have XP SP2! it says "Device Not Recognized" What can I do about this? Is there some kind of patch for Win XP to sort out this issue?

Uninstall everything related to Ipod on your computer including iTunes. Then Re-install all your drivers BEFORE you plugin your Ipod. If it still doesn't work, post back and I'll help you out more.

I have identified what the problem is, it was formatted for Windows so thats no prob, the USB cable ive got for it is unnofficial and seems to only work with USB 1.1 and not 2.0, so I borrowed a Friends Official Apple Ipod USB Cable to put it to the test and sure enough it ran fine on 2.0 with Win XP SP2 :)

I tried EVERYTHING to fix this problem and nothing worked until I downloaded the "BIOS" update to my computer. I found this on the support site of my laptop manufacturer. Everything is working fine now... Good luck.

I had same issue on my desktop PC Pentium 3ghz, 512 ram etc..
To make a long story short, I temporarily solved the issue by going into my bios and in the integrated devices disabled the USB 2.0 option, leaving the "regular" or USB 1.0 enabled. I rebooted and "amazing and thank you!" can now see the ipod no problem. Im not sure if this is hardware or software but apparently when windows fails to recognize it from a USB 2.0 stand point, it fails to drop back and try USB 1.0. I saw somewhere on line that one can purchase a USB cable for the ipod that is USB 2.0 compliant circumventing the issue all together.
Hope this helps ;)
I have always been thinking this question, but still not solved.
