Little used Ipod mini has just refused to run, if I try to switch on it just displays the apple symbol then goes to a file with an exclamation mark. The computer wont rcognise it as connected so I cant reset or update it. Tried switching the hold on/off the Menue/select as described in the Apple website but no differnce.
Checked all connections inside ant they seem OK, anyone got any Ideas how to overcome this without sending it back to Apple? many thanks. Dave

I dont think so, I can do nothing to change the display other than turn it off. In case I have missed something how do you turn it into "disk mode" Thank you for you time answering my questions, Dave.

Reset it (menu and select) then when you see the Apple logo, press << and select at the same time until it says OK to disconnect on the screen.

Actually, the disk mode keys are "Select" and "Pause"

I'm having the same problem with my iPod Mini (First Gen). I've tried all the stuff apple told me to do. Disk Mode, Update, but none of it works. If anyone can figure out why this is please tell us.
My best guess right now is my HDD is dead, Battery Life is crappy, or I need a new Motherboard. If it's any of these can someone confirm?

have you tried to restore it?
I had the same problem with my ipod mini after i dropped it. it started freezing, so i reset it, and then the apple logo appeared, then a sad ipod face logo appeared. i took it into the Geek Squad at best buy, and they said that the hard drive was fried and i had to replace it. I didnt have the money to do it, so i took it home and tried some stuff, when that didnt work, i got pissed off, and slammed it down on my desk, and then held the menu and select button, and then i held the menu and play button. it reset itself, and now its been working fine for the past month. it even kept all my songs on it. i dont know if you wnat to try that, but it might work for you too.

Try these
My iPod displays a folder icon with an exclamation point
Find out what you can do if you see a folder icon with an exclamation point when you turn on your iPod.

In most cases, the sad iPod icon indicates a hardware issue

that's how i fix most things. either it works or it's broken beyond repair. either way it's the end of the line.
I've been having the same problem, nothing seemed to work. So I did what you said hit it real hard and then started pressing random buttons. And, guess what, it works. I had to join the forum just to let you guys know!!!
