hi, was given an ipod mini from a friend. it hadnt been on for months so had to replace the battery because it wouldnt charge and the icon showing was a ! with a battery came on.

Replaced the battery and all was good until i done a restore using the ipod software updater. When it told me to unplug from the pc and plug into the mains charger to finish the flash. All it came up was the apple logo then the arrow and mains adaptor icon.

Tried the select/menu reset loads and 3 or 4 different chargers but no luck. Apple actually quoted £135 ($240) to fix it (there customer support lines are rubbish)

Anybody help me please. would be much appreciated :)

have you tried hooking it up to your computer with the firewire cable?

I have the same exact problem, I have got a couple of steps further but still no luck, I took out the hard drive and formated it with the HP formating tool, then I put it in again, the icon changed into a folder and by doing this I can now put the ipod in disk mode, then I plug it to the usb and update/restore it with the ipod software, and then .... at the begining again, I have read in another post that pluging it to a firewire cable worked, I will try to find one, anyhow I have one question, I have read in other posts that reseting the ipod with an update beeing done ruins the ipod (read it at ipodlinux.com) does anyone know if this is irreparable, (new motherboard perhaps)...

Try hooking it up with a firewire cable. I just went through this over the weekend, found a firewire cable for $3 on ebay...Hooked it up and the mini is working fine now. Itunes and the PC wouldn't recongnize the ipod through the firewire, but as soon as I got the mini back working, I hooked it up to a USB cable and everything is working fine.

I have the same problem. I found out that if you unplug the microdrive then connect the mini to usb and wait for the bad folder symbol (!folder) to appear and then plug the microdrive back in the device is thrown into disk mode allowing the computer to see it, aswell as it to see the computer... but you still cant put music on it or boot it to listen to music!!!
